Happy Christmas

Christmas Greeting from Cannington Music

I am so sorry that technical problems stopped me from posting details of the last  concert here but all  seems to be working now.

As you have seen, from the last post I managed to send out, it was a Christmas concert by Bridgwater choir The J Singers.  It was lovely to see and hear them again and I hope we can persuade them to visit us soon. It seems to be turning into a bi annual event.  We also enjoyed the mince pies, home made by a choir member, and a glass of wine!

If you look at the previous post here you will see the beginnings of next year's programme. I do hope we shall  see you.

I have also started writing a Blog on the music in the church. This gives notice of all upcoming concerts and often lists the whole of the programme details. Happy reading.

St CECILIA CONCERT

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Cannington

Cannington Music

A Concert for St Cecilia's Day

Sunday 22nd November 2015, 3.30pm

An afternoon entertainment of songs about music to celebrate the
feast day of St Cecilia, the patroness of music
followed by afternoon tea;

Mary Morgan soprano
Michael Martin piano

Admission , at the door only, £7.00 including tea

Sadly, we decided to cancel (or perhaps postpone ) the concert scheduled for Sunday October 18th. This was done partly from personal reasons of mine but mainly to avoid a clash with Stogursey's Arts Festival weekend which was presenting another concert at the same time. I look forward to playing the programme for you later, probably next year.

However you have a real treat to look forward to this month. Mary Morgan is going to sing for us on Sunday 22nd November at 3.30 pm. Once again we shall have tea together.

This is the feast day of St Cecilia, the Patron Saint of music and Mary has chosen songs that talk of music. Here is what she will sing, but not necessarily in this order. I shall play the piano for her.

Oh! Had I Jubal's Lyre (from Joshua)--George Frederic Handel

If music be the food of love--Henry Purcell

Music for a while (from Oedipus)--Henry Purcell

Orpheus with His Lute--William Schuman

Music, when soft voices die--Roger Quilter

The Princess--Edvard Grieg

A Swan--Edvard Grieg

Songs My Mother Taught Me--Anton Dvorak

An die Musik--Franz Schubert

On Wings of Song--Felix Mendelssohn

Dedication--Robert Franz

For Music--Robert Franz

Simple Gifts (an arrangement, with different words)

Mary Morgan soprano, Michael Martin piano

Normal Service Resumed

For most of last year it was almost impossible to hold any concerts in Church.
The organ was in pieces being cleaned and overhauled.

There were pipes in bundles filling the north aisle

There was a splendid, temporary, digital organ occupying floor space and blocking access to the grand piano.

So in 2014 we had just one concert, using the electronic instrument .

Now the organ is back together and looking and sounding wonderful. Newly polished and repaired case work and regilded pipework shining on the outside.  On the inside it is free from dust and dead moths and bats, and has gained some sparkling new pipe work and a new blower. The old blower motor was installed in 1941!

Now we are ready to bring Cannington Music back to life again and we are formulating a programme for the coming months.  A list will be published soon but to start things off I shall be playing the organ in a concert during the Church's flower festival this month.  We are most grateful for the generous financial support of Viridor and this event is by way of publicly thanking them.

The Parish Church of S Mary the Virgin, Cannington
A Concert by Michael Martin
7.30pm Friday 22 May 2015
£7.00, at the door only, including a glass of wine.

It is a programme of English Music for an English Organ.  "Organ Recital" can put some people off and sound a bit stuffy so this will be  a Concert with music from 5 centuries, at least, from William Byrd to Queen. From Purcell to Elgar.  I hope there will be something for everyone.
So why not come and see!!

I will post the programme here soon.

If you would to be kept in touch about other concerts here the easiest way, for you and for me, is to submit your email address in the space at the top of this post and you will be told each time I post here.  Or go the Cannington Music facebook page and LIKE it.

I hope we see you!
